European heating & cooling innovation on display in Glasgow

On 16–17 September 2025, a unique Knowledge-Sharing Workshop brought together leading European projects focused on decarbonizing heating and cooling systems. The event was held at The Ramshorn in Glasgow and co-organized by the University of Strathclyde, Scottish Enterprise, CET Partnership, and the GEOTHERMICA Initiative, with cooperation from JPP SES.
The workshop welcomed over 40 participants representing transnational projects from the CETPartnership Joint Calls 2022 and 2023, as well as initiatives funded by GEOTHERMICA and JPP SES. The gathering served as a platform for exchanging insights, fostering collaboration, and showcasing technical progress in geothermal energy, thermal storage, and smart energy system integration.
The workshop featured 16 oral presentations, covering a broad spectrum of innovative projects, including:
· CHASE – High-temperature heat pump and latent storage systems
· DEPLOI the HEAT – Commercial-scale directional drilling for geothermal
· GEOTWINS – Digital twin development for deep geothermal test sites
· E-Fryer – Electrification of food processing with advanced heat recovery
· LEG-DHC – Energy-geostructure deployment in urban environments
· Perform II, MALEG, GOES, Galleries to Calories, and more.
These projects presented exciting pathways for integrating renewable and local energy sources into both industrial and residential heating systems. "It was an inspiring day—full of technical insights, great networking, and a real sense of momentum behind the heating and cooling transition," said one of the attendees.
"What's needed to accelerate the clean heating and cooling transition?" Panelists emphasized the importance of stronger cross-sector communication and outreach to raise awareness and build momentum. They also stressed the urgent need to attract and train skilled professionals who can shape and maintain future energy systems. Finally, speakers emphasised the continued investment in research and innovation as essential to scaling up practical, cost-effective solutions that can drive real change across Europe.
On the following day, participants visited the Clyde Gateway in Glasgow to explore the 5th Generation District Heating Network and the Geothermal Test Bed — real-world examples of innovation in action.
Thank you to all participants and project teams for making the Knowledge Sharing Workshop a success and for their ongoing efforts in driving forward Europe's heating and cooling transformation.
